Julia Buss, the creative force behind Black Dog Ceramics, crafts handmade pieces that blend functionality with refined, high-end design. Her work fuses contemporary, linear aesthetics with an intimate connection to natural forms and earthy tones. Each vessel reflects her deep care and attention to detail, creating objects that are both beautiful and purposeful.

Julia is a member of Ceramics Southern Africa, and has successfully attended their bi-annual exhibitions. She has participated in three Solo Studios exhibitions and Art Unlocked. Julia holds a Masters Degree in History from the University of the Western Cape, focusing on Zulu Ceramics. In 2024 Julia was awarded first prize for Functional Studio Pottery at the Ceramics Southern Africa’s Regional Exhibition.

She believes that ceramic vessels have a social and spiritual life of their own, speaking for and to us. In her work she honours the material’s connection to the earth as part of our ancient human ancestry. This is reflected in her lifelong obsession with using indigenous natural materials like grass and thorns, as shown in “Shelter” and the quirky “Thorn in my Side”. Her love of Nguni cattle is also evident in elegant pieces like “Herd Leader” and “Two Cows” that evoke her many years of rural development work and her long association with the ceramists of KwaZulu-Natal.
